Mansfield, Pennsylvania
Mansfield PA is a borough in Tioga County. Situated in the Tioga River valley,
this town rests where two highways meet up in the north central part of the
state.
Mansfield is so named in honor of
Asa Mann, an Englishman from Rhode Island who was the first settler to
put down roots in what is now the northern end of the Mansfield. He laid out a
town plan on the land that he owned – a town that was originally called “Mann’s
Field.” |

The first community officials were
elected on March 27, 1857, which is also when the community was incorporated.
The Mansfield Classical Seminary was built and opened that same year. Today, it
has evolved to become known as Mansfield University.
Mansfield is the place where the first night football game was played beneath
electric lights on September 28, 1892. Every year, Mansfield has celebrated the
1890s with a festival that includes re-enactment of that historic game. |
